About Me

Lia King (She/They)

I offer culturally safe and affirming therapy services to community members in British Columbia. My services are focused on supporting clients heal from systems of oppression, taking a holistic approach to wellness. After engaging in therapy, clients often report feeling an increased sense of self-identity and resiliency, higher self-esteem, and a greater sense of empowerment. I approach my work through a narrative storytelling lens using my own lived experiences as a 2Spirit person to relate to my clients in meaningful ways. â€‹â€‹

I ground my work in Indigenous Feminist, 2Spirit, and Queer perspectives that understand the subjective nature of client experiences. This approach recognizes power dynamics, issues of gender-based violence, and the role they serve in colonialism. I use this framework alongside evidence-based practices in clinical mental health therapy to create individualized treatment plans and support each clients unique needs. We all experience the world differently, therefore I believe the approach used with each client needs to be as diverse and unique as they are. Together, we will work to understand which skills and practices best fit your needs.

My Story

I was raised in a small rural town in British Columbia. Growing up, I didn't have the privilege of understanding my Indigenous or gender-diverse identities. This came to me quite late in life. Not understanding these aspects of myself took a toll as I grew and developed, resulting in unhappiness, confusion, shame, and doubt. I found my own therapeutic journey to be the cornerstone of my healing, providing me with a trusting relationship, skills, and knowledge to build a positive and meaningful life. Going on this journey of self-discovery has made me passionate about supporting others with similar experiences.

I currently hold two Master degrees in Health Sciences and Clinical Social Work from the University of British Columbia Okanagan. I am a Registered Social Worker (RSW#16623), where my college ensures I hold valid liability insurance and engage in ongoing education. I started my post-secondary school at Selkirk College in 2014 before moving onto the University of British Columbia in 2016. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science focused in Clinical Psychology & Neuroscience (2019). Then, I moved directly into a Master of Science degree focusing on Indigenous Gender and Health (2021) and completed a Master of Social Work degree focusing on clinical mental health treatment (2023). I received many prestigious scholarships and recognitions for my research throughout my 9 year university career. Since this time, I have been regularly treating clients experiencing moderate to severe mental health disorders while under supervision and I am working towards registration as a clinical social worker.

Today, I live in Fruitvale, B.C., with my beautiful family. I enjoy beading, spending time with friends and family, and going on the land for harvesting and ceremony.
